The Executive Agency for Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube Marks Its 70th Anniversary
This year, the Executive Agency for Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube River marks the 70th anniversary of its establishment — a significant jubilee that offers an opportunity to look back with pride on the path it has traveled, to reflect on its achievements, and to confidently outline prospects for future development.
Over the decades of its activity, the Agency has established itself as a stable, professional, and authoritative institution that plays an important role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of navigation on the Danube. Its authority has been shaped by the work, professionalism, and dedication of many generations of specialists. Everyone who has worked and continues to work at the Agency is an integral part of this history and of its substantial institutional legacy.
The Danube has always been more than just a great European river; it is also a strategic transport artery connecting states, economies, and people. That is why the Agency’s mission — to explore, maintain, and develop the river as a safe and efficient waterway — is of key importance not only for the national transport system, but also for the broader European one.
Today, building on strong professional traditions, the Agency operates in the face of new challenges and new opportunities. These include, above all, the digitalization of river infrastructure, environmental responsibility, the modernization of navigation support systems, adaptation to climate change, and the development of modern approaches to waterway management. In this context, the continuity of generations, the combination of experience and innovation, as well as the institution’s ability to maintain high standards in a dynamic international environment, are of particular importance.
The 70th anniversary of the Executive Agency for Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube is not only a jubilee date for one institution, but also an important milestone in the history of the institutional development of Danube navigation in the region. The Agency’s experience demonstrates that the sustainable functioning of a waterway is impossible without systematic scientific support, modern technical maintenance, safety solutions, and a long-term vision for the development of river infrastructure.
The Institute of Danube Research emphasizes that under current conditions, the role of such specialized structures is only increasing. For the countries of the Danube-Black Sea region, effective management of river arteries is increasingly linked not only to transport and logistics, but also to environmental sustainability, international coordination, digital transformation, and strategic security. That is why the Agency’s 70-year path serves as an example of institutional continuity, professional responsibility, and dedication to the development of the Danube as a shared European resource.
On the occasion of the anniversary, Vitaliy Barvinenko, Director of the Institute of Danube Research, congratulated the Agency’s staff, emphasizing:
“The 70th anniversary of the Executive Agency for Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube is a landmark date not only for the institution itself, but for the entire Danube region. Behind these decades stand professionalism, dedication, and the daily responsible work of many generations of specialists who ensured the reliability and safety of navigation on one of Europe’s most important waterways.
I sincerely congratulate the management, employees, and veterans of the Agency on this remarkable anniversary. I wish you strong health, well-being, new professional achievements, the successful implementation of all your plans, and continued development in the spirit of innovation, partnership, and high standards of service to the Danube.”
