Romania: the country’s growing role in the regional oilseeds market
Romania
18.03.2026
Romania is steadily strengthening its position as one of the key producers and exporters of oilseeds in the Black Sea region. Strong demand for rapeseed and rapeseed processing products from the European processing industry continues to support farmers’ interest in expanding planted areas under this crop. Favorable weather conditions at the beginning of spring are creating preconditions for crop formation, although certain risks for fields remain after winter temperature fluctuations.
At the same time, the sunflower market also continues to demonstrate устойчивую attractiveness for agricultural producers. High prices for sunflower seeds and sunflower oil are sustaining interest in this crop despite weather-related risks, including the possibility of summer droughts.
Export activity remains high, underscoring Romania’s role as an important supplier of oilseeds to the European market. Changes in the structure of demand and processing within the EU may further enhance the country’s significance in regional trade.
IDR comment
Romania’s stronger position in the oilseeds market reflects a broader trend of reconfiguration of agricultural trade in the Black Sea and Danube regions. The country is increasingly consolidating its function not only as a producer of raw materials, but also as an important element in the European supply chain for oilseed processing. In the medium term, this may increase Romania’s influence on regional price formation, export logistics, and the balance of competition among Black Sea suppliers.
