Opening of the Danube Season: Twin City Liner launches its twentieth anniversary season
On 20 March 2026, the high-speed catamaran Twin City Liner, operated by Central Danube, officially opened the navigation season between the two Danube metropolises of Vienna and Bratislava. The company, a joint venture of Wien Holding and Raiffeisenlandesbank Niederösterreich-Wien, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
What began in 2006 as an innovative pilot project has since become an integral part of regional passenger mobility and an important driver of urban tourism. With a travel time of only 75 minutes, the service offers an efficient alternative to rail and private car travel, while onboard comfort has been continuously upgraded to meet contemporary standards. Following a record 2025, during which approximately 187,000 tickets were sold, the operator is entering its юбилей year with a strategy that combines proven service quality and a broad package of discounts for different social groups.
The economic significance of this waterway for the Austrian-Slovak cross-border region reflects the close connection between the two nearest capitals in Europe. As passenger numbers continue to grow, the vessel’s technical features — from satellite Wi-Fi to bicycle transport capacity — are becoming an increasingly important component of the company’s operational strategy.
The current catamaran, which has been in service for several years, was specifically designed for the demanding conditions of the Danube. Thanks to its shallow draft and optimized hull design, the vessel can operate even during periods of low water levels, which is a decisive competitive advantage over larger river cruise ships during increasingly frequent heat and drought periods. The vessel can accommodate up to 250 passengers. Amenities include a fully air-conditioned cabin with panoramic windows offering uninterrupted views of the river landscape, including landmarks such as the ruins of Devín Castle and the Hainburg Gate.
Comment by IDR
Experts of the Institute of Danube Research (IDR) note that the twentieth anniversary season of Twin City Liner illustrates the long-term value of sustainable passenger navigation on the Danube as a tool of cross-border integration, urban tourism development, and regional economic interaction. In the Danube macro-region, such services are important not only as transport links but also as practical examples of how waterways can reinforce functional ties between neighboring capitals and strengthen the attractiveness of the wider border region.
According to IDR, the Twin City Liner model is also relevant for the Ukrainian Danube area. It demonstrates that successful passenger river services require not only modern vessels, but also institutional continuity, strategic investment, integration with urban tourism infrastructure, and a clear focus on service quality. In the longer term, such experience may serve as a useful reference for strengthening mobility and tourism connectivity in the broader Danube-Black Sea space.
